Inorganic chemistry – first steps

What are substances made of? You learn about pure substances and mixtures, build atoms, read the periodic table and write simple reaction equations. You practise on every page. For the lower grades (grades 7 and 8).

Substances and their properties
You learn to tell pure substances from mixtures and to recognise substances by their properties.
1. Pure substances and mixtures Pure substances consist of a single kind of substance, mixtures of several. This is how you tell them apart.
2. Properties of substances State of matter, melting and boiling point: this is how you recognise substances and infer their use.
Particle model and atomic structure
You use the particle model to explain why substances are solid, liquid or gaseous, and you build atoms.

2. Atomic structure Atoms consist of protons, neutrons and electrons. This is how you build an atom.
Periodic table
You explore the periodic table, find elements by group, period and kind and tell metals from non-metals.
1. Reading the periodic table Find every element on the map: atomic number, symbol, period and group.
2. The eight main groups All eight main groups with all their elements. The main group tells how many electrons are in the outer shell.
3. Metals and non-metals Metals, non-metals and borderline cases on the map: this is how you recognise them by properties and place.
Formulas and reactions
You write elements and compounds with symbols and formulas, recognise chemical reactions and write simple reaction equations.
1. Symbols and formulas Every element has a symbol, every compound a formula. This is how you read and write them.
2. Chemical reactions In a chemical reaction new substances are formed. This is how you tell it from a change of state.
3. Reaction equations A reaction equation shows which substances react. There must be the same number of atoms on both sides.
